I'm a retired Special Education teacher, who comes from a long line of teachers. My husband and I have a 28 year old son and have been married for 33 yrs. During college I worked in the library. My love of mysteries comes from my love of puzzles. My mother was also a voracious reader. I make handpainted greeting cards, which started because I can't stand being cooped up. My church needed someone to send cards to the shutins. Music and singing are also a passion of mine. I was invited to L.A. in 2000 to make a CD. Mostly, I sing jazz of the thirties and forties. Since I'm mildly physically challenged, I really started reading a lot, and trade books with my closest friend who almost died. It keeps us connected because we can't see each other often. It keeps my mind fresh since an injury caused mild frontal lobe damage.I enjoy medical, funny, based on true stories, and I avoid books with a lot of sex. I have to love the main characters.
Now that I am retired, I'm enjoying the opportunity to read. Mysteries give me something to figure out, and I want to see how early in the book I get my answer. My mother turned me on to mysteries. I'm currently reading the new Andrew Gross, and just stacked up on a new pile while on vacation. I love Scottolline,Evanovich, James Patterson,Cornwell, and those that make me really think.
Reading when I was young was not easy for me, I had a comprehension problem. However, perserverence and working in a library got me interested in reading. My aunt was a college librarian, and she was always bringing home books. My mom would hand one to me and ask me to give it a try. The more that I read ,the faster I got and my comprehension started to improve. Mom and I got into a contest to see who could figure out, "who doneit" first. When I started to win most of the time it became a good challenge to me. Teaching children who learn differently just seemed like a natural thing for me to do. I've always believed that some of the best teachers are those who had a bit of a struggle themselves. Children, and how to reach each one is a puzzle. Obviously I became a very good reader and average seven books a month. I'm also a very busy person, but reading is my refuge.
